An Ossipoff home on O‘ahu is reimagined with contemporary, environmentally friendly elements

Before a fresh injection of color and customized details, this project by interior design firm Studio Shaolin was a dulled tropical modernism gem with great potential hidden amid black and gray tones. Renowned midcentury architect Vladimir Ossipoff originally designed the 2,280-square-foot, three-bedroom residence. The project team kept the interior bones and flow intact while diving into a sustainable and sophisticated transformation.

“The client is very health-focused; she has a family business in health and organic food, so it was ingrained in her from an early age to appreciate natural materials, sustainable furniture and definitely no chemicals on fabric, rugs etc.,” says Shaolin Low, interior designer and founder of her namesake firm.

“I personally live my life very conscious of these things as well, and have always tried, as a designer, to educate and implement these practices into all of our projects.”

Each space has its own “character, vibe and happiness to it,” Low says. Unique features like limewash walls, whimsical wallcoverings and window coverings, chic curved furnishings and a verdant preserved moss wall capture the charm and personalities of the ‘ohana.“Overall, the house feels so warm, welcoming and comfy, just like the family it houses,” Low says. “Ultimately, homes are a reflection of who you are, and I really think this house embodies our clients, their values and just the overall playfulness they have when it comes to life.”
