Home design in Hawaiʻi has evolved dramatically since I entered the interior design profession in the late 1980s. Back then, compartmentalized floor plans, stepped soffit ceilings, white walls and sunken bathtubs defined the aesthetic. (Those oversized tubs, at least, left us with generous bathroom spaces for future remodels.)

Over time, kitchen design emerged as its own specialty, with materials like travertine and mahogany becoming synonymous with “high-end” island living. Clients tended to play it safe, often mirroring what others were doing. With limited finish selections available locally, originality was rare.

The internet changed everything. Platforms like Pinterest, Houzz and HGTV opened the door to endless inspiration. Clients arrived with ideas, preferences and a stronger sense of ownership. For designers, this shift was both a blessing and a challenge.

Tiare Noelani Pinto’s experience in Hawai‘i’s interior design industry spans different styles and iterations of island themes.

On one hand, cookie-cutter projects gave way to more personalized spaces — bold finishes, varied materials and expressive color palettes. On the other, the abundance of ideas sometimes led to decision fatigue and unrealistic budget expectations.

Today, design is a true collaboration between architect, designer, builder and client. Together, we create homes tailored to individual lifestyles while respecting budget parameters. Modern island living emphasizes open layouts, seamless indoor-outdoor connections and ease of maintenance.

There is a growing shift toward minimalism. Homeowners are increasingly aware of how clutter impacts daily life, embracing the idea that a well-designed home should feel intentional, functional and calm — where everything has its place.
