As Earth Month approaches in April, sustainable and health-conscious choices are on the mind. If you’re trying to make eco-friendly decisions in your everyday life, there are some easy product swaps you can make at home to get started.
Find products you like and that work with your lifestyle: It doesn’t have to be all or nothing; every little bit counts. The more conscious you are of small decisions, the more second nature choosing sustainable options becomes overall.
Making sustainable choices can also mean shopping locally. This simple act not only supports our communities and locally owned businesses, it also reduces emissions from transportation and often means less packaging and waste. Even making the small choice of shopping close to home can mean a significantly lower carbon footprint.
We visited Kailua Honey to help get you started on your journey. Here are some smart choices you can make to take small steps towards sustainability, and some inspiration for cute household items that are sourced locally.

Kids Vegan Soap
Make bath time fun with these animal-themed, plant-based soaps. Made with olive oil, shea butter and essential oils — and always cruelty-free — these soaps are perfect for growing bodies and creative minds.

Dryer Balls
These reusable wool dryer balls can reduce the duration of your dryer cycle by approximately 25 percent and last up to 1,000 cycles.

Swedish Dishcloths
These sponge-like reusable cloths are an effective replacement for paper towels. A single dishcloth can last anywhere from six months to a year (sometimes longer with proper care). They’re durable, ultra-absorbent and quick-drying and when it’s time to clean them, you can just throw them in the washing machine.

Wooden Ornaments
Add a tasteful decorative detail to any space with these wooden ornaments depicting local scenery, foliage and animals.

Meli Wraps
These beeswax wraps are handy for food storage, similar to plastic cling wrap. They’re easily moldable and hold form over bowls and Tupperware, or you can just wrap up your food items inside like you would with tin foil!

Multi-Use Towels
An eco-friendly and locally designed option, these dish towels from Kailua Honey are made from recycled plastic bottles and come in six colorful, Hawai‘i-inspired patterns.

Aloha ‘Āina Scented Candles
Bring aromatherapy to your home with familiar local scents like hibiscus and plumeria. These soy wax candles are handmade on Maui and use lead-free wicks.
