True colors shine through expressive personal details

At a recent pedicure appointment, I came prepared with a very intentional reason for the nail polish color I’d pick. I told Marielle, my pedicurist, that I rewatched my favorite Netflix movie “K-Pop Demon Hunters” and wanted an iridescent pink that would remind me of the film’s powerful final scene — a shade that’s refreshing, grounding and joyful all at once.
Colors and finishes ironically became a recurring theme as Marielle and I chatted throughout the appointment. We “talked shop” about her many DIY projects as a young new homeowner updating a house originally built 20 years ago by a contractor as his personal residence. Marielle said the house was generally designed well with timeless materials that hold up today.
Marielle was excited about swapping silver cabinet handles for golden ones to complement the existing earthy stonework in her bathroom. Replacements for old fixtures and dated shag carpet are forthcoming, and Marielle could envision how each simple change she’d make along the way would culminate in a house that fully felt like home.
Our “Design with Purpose” issue was partially inspired by this conversation. Finding your “why” for decisions big and small is a fascinating process, especially when it comes to home improvement and renovations. In addition to balancing practical considerations like budget and longevity, it’s important to infuse your personal story in design elements, as well.
The pages that follow include examples of intentionality in aging-in-place, architecture, kitchen and bath remodeling, lighting and more. We hope you’ll take down notes from the industry pros and local homeowners who share their mana‘o, and be present enough in your next project to focus not just on how it’s done, but why, too.
