Aloha kākou,
Welcome to our very first issue of Kuʻu Home! If you’re holding this magazine in your hands, it means something special is beginning — and I’m truly grateful you’re here with us. Mahalo.
At Trade Media Hui, we’ve spent more than 70 years telling Hawai‘i’s stories through the lens of our trade industries — the builders, property managers, hoteliers, people and construction projects that keep our islands moving forward. But for a long time, I felt a missing piece: a place where we could talk story not only about the work of building, but about the reason we build — the spaces where our lives unfold.
Kuʻu Home is that place.
In Hawaiʻi, home is more than a structure or a place where we hang our hats. It’s a feeling. It’s where generations gather, where kūpuna are cared for, where keiki grow up and where memories live in the walls. Our homes connect us to ʻāina, to genealogy, to community and to the everyday rhythms that make us who we are. That’s why we chose the name Kuʻu Home — “my beloved home.” It’s a reminder that the spaces we live in are not just houses, but something precious.
On a personal note, my ʻohana has lived off-grid for the past 13 years while building our forever home in Kāneʻohe. It’s not the typical Oʻahu setup — we rely on a water catchment and photovoltaic panels and there’s always something to maintain, fix or rethink. Living this way has taught me how much care and creativity it takes to make a home truly work for your ʻohana. And I’ve learned that even small steps — a smart repair, a better layout, a practical upgrade — can make a big difference in how we live.
That spirit is what Kuʻu Home is all about. This magazine is for anyone who has ever looked around their place and thought, “How can we make this better for our ʻohana?” It’s for homeowners, renters, DIY-ers and families making room for one more generation. It’s also for those caring for loved ones, planning to age-in-place or simply trying to create more comfort and pride in everyday spaces.
Above all, Kuʻu Home is rooted in aloha — the way we welcome people into our homes, the way we mālama what we have and the way we share knowledge so our communities can thrive.
Mahalo nui for welcoming us into your home. We’re honored to be part of your journey, and we can’t wait to grow with you.
Aloha nui,

Faith Freitas
