Dana Knight, senior director of global marketing at Feit Electric, is a self-proclaimed “lighting nerd.” When asked how renters can play with lighting options, she’s quick to offer suggestions that don’t require major rewiring.
“Replacing your light bulbs is an easy way to update the look of any room,” Knight notes. “Consider the mood you want to set in the space to determine the shade of white light or color temperature appropriate for the room. If you have a space that has multiple uses throughout the day, consider an adjustable white light bulb or fixture.”
The world of lighting is broad, nuanced — and fun. This renter-friendly guide explores bulb shapes, filament designs and recommended lighting temperatures for every room.

Adjustable White A19 Light Bulbs
This single bulb can quickly toggle between various tones. It’s perfect for renters who want a foolproof lighting strategy that can switch from bright and crisp during the day to warm and moody at night.
Decorative Edison Bulbs
Retro enthusiasts appreciate the antique look of this bulb, with modern iterations integrating options like LED technology and long-lasting golden illumination. Pair the Edison bulb with pendant fixtures or rustic sconces.

Globe Light Bulbs
These bold bulbs are designed to make a statement. They work best fully exposed in bathroom lighting, especially if you’re going for an old-Hollywood vanity look around a makeup mirror.
Candelabra and Chandelier Bulbs
The elegant glasswork and flame-tip shape on these bulbs are decorative even when the lights are off. Bulbs with exposed white filaments add a sophisticated vibe to any design theme.

Soothing and Ambient: Soft White Bulbs
The Kelvin (K) scale measures the color temperature of light ranging from candlelight tones in lower degrees to blue-white on the higher end. Soft white bulbs at 2700K produce a golden-amber glow that works well for a relaxing atmosphere in bedrooms, dining areas and living rooms.

Clear and Welcoming: Bright White Bulbs
At 3000K, bright white bulbs maintain a sense of comfort with a bit more brilliance than soft white bulbs. Living rooms can also benefit from bright white accent lighting, in addition to hallways and bathrooms. Knight, however, advises against mixing different color temperatures and brightness levels in one fixture.

Balanced and Clean: Neutral White Bulbs
Kitchens, home offices and laundry rooms are complemented by neutral white bulbs at 3500K. The glow of these bulbs is not too yellow, not too white — a middle range of illumination that isn’t overpowering. Pro tip: Check Color Rendering Index ratings for lighting that looks crisp and natural.

Focused and Alert: Cool White Bulbs
When working on detailed tasks in a kitchen, garage, workshop or laundry room, you want lighting that’s strong but not distracting. The slight blue tint in cool white bulbs at 4000K enhances visibility and clarity in these spaces. Knight advises not to confuse color temperature with brightness levels that are measured in lumens or watts.

Vibrant and Invigorating: Daylight Bulbs
At 5000K, daylight bulbs are named for their simulation of natural sunlight. Home offices, art studios and spaces that require accurate color representation benefit best from these bulbs. Some lighting experts suggest that daylight bulbs can also affect mood and energy levels to prevent lethargy.

Renter-Friendly Cordless Rechargeable Lighting
If you’re lucky enough to have a lānai, patio or balcony at your rental, internationally popular lighting company Pooky is among a growing market of manufacturers producing rechargeable lamps that can work outdoors and indoors. We’re loving Pooky’s new collaboration with designers Bob and Courtney Novogratz with cordless lanterns, rechargeable lamps and lampshades that are stylish and portable.
The collaboration draws “inspiration from our love of vibrant colors and outdoor living with hints of midcentury design,” Courtney Novogratz notes on Pooky’s website. “The collection beautifully blends our contemporary style with Pooky’s elegant twist on traditional lighting, resulting in pieces that feel both fresh and sophisticated.”
