Your place is feeling kind of drab and you’re getting ready to make some changes to liven things up. You’ve got some general ideas of what you want done and are pretty confident in your own tastes and sense of style.
“I got this,” you may tell yourself.
You may very well have great taste and know what you are doing — but here is a question to ask yourself before diving headfirst into that interior renovation on your own:
Why should I hire an interior designer?
A skilled interior designer makes life easier for their clients by always keeping their best interests, tastes and dislikes at the forefront of every decision. It’s ideal to bring a designer onto the project from the very beginning so the full design can be thoughtfully developed before construction starts, preventing rushed decisions and avoiding an end result the client won’t be happy with. Designers work closely with clients to build a strong relationship and a deep understanding of how they live, allowing them to create a design that supports everyday function while remaining aesthetically pleasing.
Behind the scenes, interior designers work proactively to prevent design discrepancies or surprises. Coordinating with contractors and subcontractors ensures the project aligns with the intended design, stays within budget and remains on schedule. With meticulous attention to detail, a trained designer plans things like proper tile installation layouts, trim and threshold needs, material selection, layouts that meet code and verifying all custom millwork for accuracy.
Through precise computer-aided drafting, designers provide contractors with clear drawings that reduce the number of clarifications needed from clients, especially technical questions clients shouldn’t be expected to answer. The designers’ expertise allows them to thoroughly review cabinet shop drawings, countertop fabrications, plumbing submittals and all other custom fabrications. They also manage the selection and documentation of plumbing fixtures, appliances, lighting, decorative hardware and finishes, creating comprehensive schedules for contractors and architects to follow.
With deep knowledge of the entire process, designers guide clients through decisions, so they never feel overwhelmed, and they apply extensive experience in both architectural and interior design to ensure the home functions beautifully. Even the placement and coordination of light switches, outlets, thermostats and similar details are thoughtfully reviewed to achieve a seamless result.

One of my recent projects was a Mānoa home renovation where I worked with the client’s requests, drafting and reviewing extensive cabinet shop drawings to make sure everything was perfect and fit all her household items. This included customizing her laundry cabinets and even getting the cabinet wood and stain just right.
I added accessory components inside the kitchen cabinets, which I knew would serve her storage purposes. She was always worried about not having enough storage and once the project was over, she realized she had tons of storage and couldn’t be happier.
Without an interior designer, the visionary part of a renovation can be very hard for clients to grasp. This same client was worried about the new finishes matching the existing parts of the home and being cohesive — I keep saying “trust me,” and in the end, she said I was right.
Trust is the biggest part of hiring a designer, so find one that suits you and your goals.
